Scouting is Fun

The 10th Council – Wide Jamborette was held at Cabcabon, Banga, Bayawan City last June 19-24, 2007.

The Boy Scouts who joined the said jamborette went to Cabcabon last June 19, 2007 to prepare their tents. Each Boy Scout was so happy. Their feelings can be determined on their faces. Eventhough, the sun was so hot; the Boy Scouts were so noisy causing the disturbance of the neighboring campus. Even I, Benito Albia, Jeorge Ponce Jr. and other members of outfit # 1 – Crew # 1 was disturbed.

In the morning our outfit advisers got mad on us. They warned all the Boy Scouts that if they will still behaved the same as last night last night, all outfit # 1 will go home. So, our outfit behaves and obeys our advisers.

On the other hand, the 10th Council – Wide Jamborette was formally opened last June 20, 2007. It was also the beginning of the different activities. Our beloved city mayor German P. Saraña, Jr. talked on how to produce Bio-diesel. He also demonstrated the uses of bio-diesel. He also explained to us the importance of Waste Management and Organic Fertilizer Production.
Then, in the afternoon of June 20, 2007 and the rest of the days, the Base Method which consists of First Aid, Knot Tying, Kite Making and Flying, Arnis, Orienteering, Emergency Preparedness, Fire by Friction, Cooking rice in a Bamboo Tube, Scouting Game 142, and the Challenge Valley were tackled.

Among the mentioned activities, many Boy Scouts put more interest to "Challenge Valley" because it was more challenging than any other activities. This activity consisted of commando crawled, climbing the mountain with the use of ropes, spider web, rope walk, blind folded, obstacle of the tires and crawling under the barbed ropes.

The Sub-Campfire was performed last June 21, 2007. During the Sub-Campfire of Sub-Camp 6, Bayawan City Division got the 2nd place while Mabinay High School got the 1st place.
On the other hand, the Grand Campfire presentation was still won by Mabinay High School. During the presentation, we were able to watch different cultural numbers from different delegates.

Then on June 23, the Boy Scouts joined the community service the "Tree Planting". The Boy Scouts planted trees at the back of the City Jail.

The scouting ended giving all the scouters happiness for they have done unforgettable adventures.

A Lost Friend

By Mary Cherry S. Sanchez

Aireen was a genius, beautiful and friendly girl. We were close friends, and we spent our leisure time by reading novels. She was also a journalist at her school. Being popular, many boys wished to capture her attention. Somehow, Aireen always spent her time on books; she didn’t waste her time by doing useless things. We were always having fun together. We went to beach every Saturday morning and attended mass every Sunday morning.

Monday morning when I was about to go to school, Aireen knocked on our door. We had a short talk and she told me that she was leaving for Cebu to continue her studies and stay there for good. I asked her if she’d come back, but she didn’t answer me, she just hugged me and cried. When she arrived in Cebu, she called me on the phone. She said that her mother had enrolled her already at a private school in St. Paul. I was so happy for her, I cried secretly while she was talking on the phone. Maybe I just missed our happy times together. Weeks and months passed by, I haven’t received any phone calls from her. I tried to call her but nobody answered.
One cold night while I ate my supper, I heard the phone ringing. I immediately ran towards my room to answer the phone. I thought it was she, but the voice that I’ve heard talking in the phone was her father. Her father informed me that Aireen was gone. She died on a bus accident. He told me the whole incident. I cried so hard that night, thinking that my best friend was gone. That I didn’t expect.
Now when I look at the beach and its calmness, it magnifies Aireen on my mind, the best friend that left imprints in my heart and soul.

Worldwide Balik Tanjay: A Nostalgic Experience

The White Stallion, Tanjay National High School(Opao)

There is something mystical and magical about Tanjay. When one is a Tanjayanon he carries with him the fond memories of old Tanjay town wherever he goes. There is a kind of special bonding between Tanjay and its citizens. Tanjayanons have a very strong feeling of attachment to their hometown and are so proud to be Tanjayanons. Among Tanjayanons, a kind of fondness exists among them when they are in a distant land. They may not be close enough to be called friends here in Tanjay, but when they meet in far away place, they are attracted by a feeling of fondness and friendship.

Perhaps, again, this kind of fondness drives these Tanjayanons to organize the Worldwide Balik-Tanjay in order to trace their roots and relive the happy days and fond memories of yesterday when they were still in Tanjay. The program also enables them to meet relatives whom they have not met and renew old acquaintances and friendships. More than anything else, the program enables expatriate Tanjayanons to see for themselves the progress that Tanjay has made and perhaps contribute in their own small way what they can for the progress of Tanjay. The program affords an opportunity for the Tanjayanons to invite foreign tourists to visit Tanjay. In this way, the development of local tourism may be put into high gear.

The Worldwide Balik-Tanjay program is really one nostalgic experience. As the saying goes, "You never leave a place you love; you either take a part of it with you, or leave a part of yourself behind."

Help, Save Mother Earth!

From: The Channel, the official english publication of Sta. Catalina Community High School

NORSU—Sta. Catalina-Bayawan campus held a day seminar in relation to their culmination program for the Science Month Celebration.

In the seminar, the lecturer Dr. Hilconida Calumpong, director for Marine Laboratory of Silliman University, challenged every person who lives in the planet earth to plant as many trees as could be planted. She stressed that the use of fossil fuels in the form of gasoline, kerosene, (LPG) liquefied petroleum gas, bunker oil and other by-products of refining the fossil fuels contributed to a large degree on global warming. Due to the continuous emission of carbon dioxide as these fuels are burnt, the accumulated volume of this gas needs to be minimized. It could only be made possible if more trees were planted. Trees are very good scavengers of carbon dioxide as it is needed in photosynthesis.

As a resident of planet earth you and me are accountable in helping reduce global warming. Let us plant more trees!

When All Else Fails . . . What Makes You Go On?

This article is a contribution of the editor-in-chief of The Channel year 1997, Chona T. Chin.

Despair . . . The most common dilemma of each individual as a part of life’s struggle. It makes it chilly presence felt in any form of catastrophe wherein oftentimes the "senseless" word is being attached. Once faced with this, one cannot help but confront it squarely. After all, each of us has come to know that living is never easy. The underlying question then was . . . what makes a person faced with disheartenment continue to dwell the emptiness of his naked existence? If you want look for the answers, you would find that there’s no definite cure to despair. It is a force, a spirit within us, but in the end it is still a choice. In some moments in each of our lives, we each decide whether to throw away our despair or our hope. In the face of life’s outbreaks, which shall we choose? Hope or despair?

She was born with a complete sight, hearing and speech ability, but she acquired sickness and almost died. She became blind, deaf, and mute. She then grew up to be a difficult child. She was hopeless and rude as expected from a child who couldn’t see, talk, or hear. It was when she met a wonderful teacher Ms. Sullivan who became an instrument nor her journey to learning. Eventually, the once difficult child became one of the world’s inspirations and an icon to those who are physically handicapped. She was Hellen Keller, one of the world’s most renowned inspirational writers.

A colored girl from a broken family who lived in a poor neighborhood with her mother was constantly abused sexually by male relatives. It ended when she moved to her father who was then strict and disciplinarian when she was 14. She struggled with drug addiction and lost a baby during her adolescence. Then she was able to secure a scholarship, went to a university and eventually changed her life. She is now one of America’s richest and most influential woman. She uses her wealth and power to help and inspire other people. She is the famous Ophrah Winfrey.
During World War II, a young doctor was unjustly imprisoned and put in the concentration camps for almost three years without knowing the whereabouts of his loved-ones. The belief of one day he would be reunited with his beloved gave him faith and survived him despite of torment, hunger, humiliation, and the possibility of being exterminated. Only to discover that only his sister was able to escape earlier. His father, mother, brother and wife were either died in hostile concentration camps, of hunger or were sent to gas oven. But such suffering never stopped him to go on with life. He proposed that there can be meaning in suffering and that searching for this meaning is just enough to go on. He married again, have children, continued his medical profession. He is now one of the most respected persona in psychology who introduced Logotheraphy as his approach in existential counseling. Sir Victor Emil Frankl, writer of inspirational books, doctor, psychologist, therapist and survivor of holocaust.

This boy’s mother died when he was nine. He lost his brother when he was twelve. The only family he had was his father who also died of starvation during the 2nd World War when he was twenty. Darkness, hopelessness and death were in every corner of his once Nazi free country. He worked as a stone breaker, factory worker and a stage actor just to earn a living. Most of his friends died also of hunger, deprivation, and injustices including his best friend priest who was executed for reasons of helping the Jewish community. Almost all of the people he knew having been suffered the senseless brutality questioned God’s existence. However, even for a second he never lost his faith, he studied in the seminary secretly, he survived, fought and thought a lot of people. He became a humble priest. His endeavor won him to be one of the most respected religious leaders in the world. He attempted to unite all kinds of religious leaders with different beliefs, became an inspiration and beloved not only to the catholic communities. He was one of the most beloved priests, Karol Wojtyla most remembered as the great POPE JOHN PAUL II.
What does it mean to choose the path of hope? It means we continue to labor for decency amidst in a conflicted society. It means that we refuse to be isolated and withdrawn, but face life’s flaws and imperfections and never give up on life.

From the fragments of our experiences, at times we came to find strategies in preserving our hope. Everything seems to be tolerable by merely imagining the images of a beloved person, by faith in God, by a little sense of humor and or even by glimpses of nature. But not all of these establish a desire to be hopeful unless we search for the large sense of our suffering. At times anticipating for hope seemed to be irrational, even then, even now, hope as a reason to go on with life is something else. It is a thing of beauty, an unexplainable splendor that makes life worth going on.

How do you love yourself?

By Diana Krisitna Cassandra E. Zerna

Catherina Cittadini (St. Louis) School

Loving yourself allows you to see the beauty of others. It opens your senses to the dazzling sight of divine light, to the sweetness of your own life experience and to the power of your focused incarnation. Loving yourself also allows your consciousness to assume the shape of love.

We tend to block the flow of love for others that continuously waft through our awareness, freshening and cleansing our energetic field. In fact, the more talented and creative you are, the more you will probably come up with extraordinary ways to prevent yourself from loving yourself.

There are simple steps that can dislodge whatever has been blocking your flow of love. One is the willingness to see the obstacles to love as illusory. Another is to honor the Creator through loving His creation.

If you are willing to love yourself this way, you also expand your capacity to love others. As you love others with more authenticity, you shine love’s light everywhere you go.

SIMPLE JOYS

No amount of popularity, power or wealth can match the simple joys we experience especially with our loved ones. We are usually overjoyed by the love, care and attention showed upon us by our doting parents.

Happiness can’t be measured just by the material wealth we acquire. We can also experience joy in our hearts when we get satisfaction from being able to help others without expecting anything in return.

Most of all, one has to understand God’s plan in order to really enjoy the gift of life.

Daddy’s Melody

By: Adelle Kho

Catherina Cittadini (St. Louis) School

As I was reminiscing with the background of light music in the air, I ardently noticed how time flies so fast and how 15 years swiftly passed by. It abruptly came to my mind because of the music ringing on my ears. As a child, I was already exposed to a variety of music and was greatly influenced by my parents who were somewhat music aficionados as well.

After years of hearing an assortment of music, I can’t help to compare. I grew up listening to various kinds of artists and singing into a range of genre. I’m most familiar of songs by “Michael Learns To Rock”, “Air Supply”, “The Carpenters”, etc. If I am to weigh current tunes to the archaic ones, I say the classics outshine every latest melody because of their simplicity and profound sense as a song. Honestly speaking, I find music nowadays mostly of no sense. But still, something clings to me forbidding me to lose this passion for music.

Most of the passion for music was innately from my father for he was the real, active singer of the family plus, he was really fun to be with. As a child, I grew up getting to ride at the front of the motorcycle, which satisfied me a lot because my two small hands were then so eager to grip the handlebars for a pretend race. And then, everytime we encounter a bend in the road, I would imitate him in leaning on the side as much as my thin and feeble-looking body could afford. I still vaguely remember those times when they would sing songs in acapella or karaoke during annual fiestas or special occasions. I wasn’t yet old enough to mind the elder ones singing to the top of their voices. See, I was busy playing by then. But still, I became fond of the songs since then, especially classics such as “Hotel California”, “Dust in the Wind” and “25 min Too Late”. I presume that my life back then was so musical because until now, we still have vintage giant albums, which I cannot recognize anymore. They were my father’s. He would play them in our Akai CD Player or sometimes I just hear music from tapes. We would enjoy but those were the bygone days that were yesterday.

I soon realized the importance of knowing things about your loved ones and being able to share these things with each other before it becomes too late. My father passed away when I was 7. Too young to accept and handle loss but old enough to understand the significance of life and love. It’s hard to accept reality that nothing is inevitable until it occurs. Anything that happens to us happens at the time God chooses. We can’t change fate nor escape it. As I entered into my teenage years, I started to know more about my father. I just knew that his favorites were singers like Jon Bon Jovi, Simon and Garfunkel and other rock or acoustic artists. I never knew about that. I realized I’ve missed a lot of his life.

Knowing my father’s song doesn’t make any difference because I can do nothing about reality. I’m too late to even sing it with him. But still, I remain positive on this mysterious force that draws me into the depths of music. It partially gives some legacy in different faces. Why can’t we be like classical songs? That can be preserved for some time and cannot be easily obliterated in the face of the earth. My father’s loss brought us anguish and misery but at the same time, brought redemption in a way. Now, I take his favorite songs as replicas of his memory. Even though I know so little about it. Daddy’s melody will always remain in my heart as long as this lives. Those timeless memories of the past will last a lifetime. I still believe that someday, I will be able to sing his song to him and with him. And I’m still looking forward to that day.

ALL for ONE, ONE for ALL- this applies not only to the Three Musketeers but for the Angel Sealtiel Class as well. We see no reason to push to get ahead, we are content with patience instead, often criticized and misunderstood, but if you'll look into our hearts you'll see we're good. This is our story.

During our Second Year in High School, we were the Angel Uriel Class. We had a lot of conflicts and misunderstandings in our class; it was a difficult time for us. It was the time of the year when friends weren't dear. There was a time when the whole class was against a classmate and this happened thrice. There was a time when one group of friends was against another group of friends. There was also a time when friends fought against each other. But despite all of these, we were able to realize that all those conflicts were just gifts from God and were God's ways to bind us together.

At exactly 8 o 'clock in the morning of February 7, we arrived at Antonio Co's Beach Resort in Sacsac, Bacong, Oriental Negros for our class Recollection. After lunch, Fr. Julius Heruela, who facilitated our recollection, asked us to write eight messages to classmates whom we weren't really close with. For most of us, it was not easy to forgive and forget others, but we were able to overcome this. Present that afternoon were the mixed emotions of the Angel Uriel class. We were hugging each other while tears of regret and joy streamed down our faces. Nothing will ever be the same again, our newly found friendship with each other bound us and we will make it last forever. The scenarios that followed were the clicks and flash of cameras countered by our smiling faces that reached the heavens that afternoon.

On the last day of our Second Year life, we gave our adviser a trophy saying, “D' Best Adviser in the Whole World!” To our beloved adviser, Mr. Lary T. Gajelomo, thank you for being able to withstand the storm…that is our class.

Summer vacation felt like forever until we realized that it was time to get back to school, to begin a new school year. The year started with two unfortunate events: one of our classmates moved to Manila and another one transferred to the school next door. At the beginning of the school year, minor and major problems swarmed our tight-knitted class. We were able to conquer all of these problems together.

One day, October 23, an innocent teacher and adviser went teary eyes with a surprise birthday blast that we were able to organize. The said party was planned all throughout Tuesday, the day before, without the knowledge of the birthday celebrant. To our dearest adviser, Mr. Roy K. Pavericio, thank you and belated happy birthday. I wonder… When will be the next time that our organizational skills will be put to the test?

When we join contests, of course we want to win but still, our attention is focused on our being able to work and win them together. We don't want to wage wars and fight battles; all we want to do is enjoy the company of each other. And, yes, we do defend each other. We do this because that is how we show our love and care for each other. The truth is, we want to be remembered not as an attention-wanting section like what most think but all we want is to be remembered as a class with a motto, a theme and a purpose. We are different from each other and that is why we are unique. We COLLIDE and we want all of you to know that!!

The Best Book I Have Ever Read

By: Rasselle Louise L. Mercado

Catherina Cittadini (St. Louis) School

I am the kind of person who caters to an array of reading materials. The book that I choose to read actually depends on my mood. I may feel romantic, though I don’t know why, I read a book that mainly focuses on the L word---LOVE! There are also times wherein I feel down and as if all the world’s problems are on my shoulders, then, I read an inspirational book, or maybe even, a self-help book and in a couple of minutes, it would be sure to ease all my worries. At most times, I may also feel reading books that are not really serious; books that are “teen-oriented” as I fondly call it. But, out of all the books that I have read in my whole life, a book really stands out from the rest; it’s a book that I wouldn’t normally read because as I said, I mostly read all these “teen-oriented” books, but I don’t know, it really just screams “WOW!”, and it’s a masterpiece of the world-renowned author, Mitch Albom----------- “THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN”.

My journey with the book actually started, just weeks ago, during USSR sessions because one time, it was a Wednesday and we normally have this USSR and so, I was searching in my bag for something, then POOF!, that book was what I saw and I actually got a bit curious of what this book was about because people before (it had been out since 2003) keep telling me how beautiful and somewhat strange, the book was. As they have described it, beautiful and strange, at the same time. Now, I wouldn’t normally read books of that classification, but those 2 descriptions seduced me into reading it. So, my journey with “THE BOOK” started. Now, let me give you my own personal review on “THE BOOK”. This book is actually very interesting because unlike other books, it starts from the end. Yes, the end. Could there be more irony, injected in this book? I think not. But, anyways, it starts with the main character, Eddie, continuing his work in an amusement park called Ruby Pier. He dedicates his life to keeping the park safe for its hundreds of guests, using a cane to get around because when he was a soldier, his leg was wounded. It was actually Eddie’s 83rd birthday on that day that he died because of a ride called the Freddy’s Free Fall. With this, Eddie is transported to heaven, but he actually doesn’t know this. As though awakening from a dream, he finds himself alone in the deserted theme park and decides to explore. At that moment, he felt limited emotions for he felt that he was floating and that no feeling of agony, sadness or even fear was felt. Everything was silent around him. As he was touring around this place, he suddenly arrives at an old amusement park ride---the Ruby Pier of his childhood. He had no cane and he could run like a boy, he does not have any hurt in his back and his leg is not injured. Staying there, he meets the first person in heaven: The Blue Man.The Blue man explained to him that there were five people he will meet in heaven and each of them was in his life for a reason. Quoting his words, he said, “You may not have known the reason at the time, and that is what heaven is for. For understanding your life on earth”. As the Blue Man kept talking, Eddie learned that when he was a kid, the Blue Man died due to a “heart attack” after he had avoided injuring him with a car when Eddie was running to the road trying to reach a ball with which he was playing. The Blue Man felt dizzy and his head dropped momentarily, so he collided with the rear of a parked truck where he died. In the hands of the Blue Man, Eddie learned his first lesson that in Earth there should have a balance to all. “Birth and death are part of a whole”, he says. One person dies to give other person life such as The Blue Man died to give Eddie life. The Commander who was Eddie’s commanding officer in the war where Eddie served when he was young is the second person he meets in heaven. Eddie and the Commander met in a sort of a terrain, where, when they were still soldiers, were prisoners a long time ago. Exactly the same things occurred before---the same sounds he heard before, as well as, the same weapons he used when he was still a prisoner. They started exchanging stories to each other; their experiences and the things that had had happened during the war. They especially remembered a time when they burned down a supply hut. At that time, thinking that there was someone alive inside the supply hut; Eddie refused to leave, despite the building burning around him. This prompted the Commander to fire a shot at Eddie’s leg in order to disable him and get him out, believing that the wound would heal. Eddie never found out who had shot him and discovering that it was the Commander who had shot him, Eddie became furious! And started telling the Commander how damaging the effects were of the Commander shooting his leg were; how the shot had a lifetime effect on him but, suddenly, the Commander teaches Eddie the second lesson: Sacrifice. All people in Earth sacrifice for another person or for some reason. Eddie sacrificed his leg to gain life because he almost died in the war and it was not his time to die. The Commander did the same because he died trying to maintain to keep him alive and the other war partners. Now, it was time for Eddie’s third lesson. Eddie’s surroundings change again. He finds himself on a snow mountain, and he keeps walking until he sees his own father in a restaurant. Albom describes Eddie’s relationship with his father when he was still a child up to when he was already 83. During Eddie’s life, his father always insulted him. Later, he turned violent with Eddie and when Eddie returned from the war and decided to stop his mistreatments, Eddie’s father never spoke to him again. At the time of Eddie’s flashbacks, a woman suddenly appears in front of Eddie and introduces herself as Ruby. Eddie learns that Ruby is actually the owner of the Ruby Pier and during their conversation, their topic shifts to Eddie’s father and Eddie learns that he died trying to save a friend from drowning. With this, she tells Eddie that as humans, we should be considerable to those who have done well to us. She teaches him the third lesson: Forgiveness. Eddie must now forgive his father of all his’ faults and bury all his hurts toward his father. The fourth person Eddie meets in heaven is his wife: Marguerite. Eddie meets her as though they were still young when they got married. Eddie was very ecstatic to meet her for he was still madly and deeply in love with her and with this, they started exchanging stories and they forgave each other of not having been able to have children. Eddie told Marguerite all the events that occurred after she died of breast cancer. After exchanging stories, Eddie learns her fourth lesson, that love does not have an end. When people die, love takes a different form, that’s all. But, love still is love in death and she has been waiting for him in heaven to love him to. She teaches him that love is truly eternal and everlasting. The last person Eddie was to meet is the little girl who died in the barn that Eddie burned down during the war. She reveals that it was she who pulled Eddie to heaven- the small hands he felt just before he died were hers. He felt really sorry and started sobbing. He was so sorry he had left the girl and burned her.

So, an interesting story, eh? I too, agree. The message of this book explores the idea that we are all connected to one another so, an action done by one person is destined to have an unanticipated and drastic influence upon someone else’s. Along these same lines, the book reminds us of how easy it is to fail to express appreciation or gratitude to those we love until it is too late to do so. I really felt saddened by some of the stories, since most illustrate that Eddie lived his life completely unaware of just how much he was treasured by his family and friends. It’s actually very beautiful and somewhat unusual, as what they said it was. So, open that book that you really wouldn’t even consider reading, because who knows, it might just be your favorite book, as it is mine!

Ciao!

TECHNOLOGICAL ERROR?

Bien Rafael Llanes
Catherina Cittadini (St. Louis) School

As time went by, we can clearly see the step-by-step improvement in the field of science and technology. Communication, transportation and even entertainment have progressed. Things are now fast and easy to do. Thanks to the inventors of technology who worked tirelessly for the benefit of mankind.

One of the results of technology is the invention of computers. Computers can greatly help us in our everyday activities. We can communicate with other people from far places, do some research or even play games for entertainment in your computer. That is why we can see many internet cafes around for the convenience of the people who cannot afford to buy one.

In status quo, we can see that these internet cafes have became a tool for the degradation of the educational activities of students. It is because of the computer games that is poisoning the minds of the youth. During breaks, weekends or even school hours, we can see bundles of students flooding internet cafes and playing those computer games. Instead of going to school, they spend long hours staying in internet cafes. Instead of using their money for important purposes, they spend it all in these places just to play their “crave-to-play” games. They are not aware of the consequences of their actions. They are only thinking of the enjoyment they can get from these fantasy-based computer games.

Our parents send us to school for us to learn and to be educated. They give us money to be used only for good and important purposes. They are doing these to give us a comfortable life in the near future. They don't want us to suffer when we grow up. But what are we doing? We are doing the opposite. We are putting all their efforts to waste by spending long hours and money in internet cafes. We should even give our gratitude to them for giving us all these things. Stopping this habit and studying properly should be done as a way of giving gratitude to our parents.

We are not totally saying that these games are bad. The cooperation from teachers, parents and even the students is needed. There should be a constant supervision of parents and teachers in order to stop this delinquency among students. Disciplinary action should be done in early signs of delinquency.

Their action may be small but it can lead to bigger problems. We must act now. Computer games are not the number one enemy but the addiction of the students is.

Money, Fame, Freedom

By: Lara Flynn Barot
Immaculate Heart Academy, Tanjay City

Many of us students nowadays have already forgotten how to live life in a more worthy way. We forgot the things our elementary teachers taught us about God and about respecting humanity. MONEY, FAME, FREEDOM. These things have greatly affected our attitudes towards ourselves, others, and towards God.

As young as we are, we students have already valued money just like our lives. Money ruled us. Why not, let us rule over money? This is because we already injected in our minds that we can’t live without money. That money is a thing that everybody should have. Yes, that is true. Because we live with technology, and we need money to continue living with technology. But money is not the only thing that we need. We need to have the love and care of others.
Fame also have greatly changed us, and our point if view in life. We have made fame the reason to strive hard for our money. But in a different and difficult way. We knew that with fame, people will praise and look up on us. That is why we tend to be someone we’re not. We tend to join different fraternities that as we believe, will greatly put us to the top and we thought that through this, people will idolize us.

Youth always seek freedom. Freedom that will give them a feeling that as if they have been freed from a cage. But we have greatly abused this freedom. We use this freedom to do the things we should not do. We use this freedom to go against our parents.
I have seen how these three change the sight of our society. I have seen how these things are abused to the extent that many lives are wasted and ended.

Will you wait until these three affect and end your life too?

Why Pigs are Fat

by Ina Elnar
ABC Dumaguete Correspondent

There was a time when pigs were thin. At that time, there lived a princess named Cessy who was the “spoiledest” brat in the whole world. She had everything she needed but these weren’t enough to satisfy her!

One night, as she was seated at the dinner table, she observed all the delicious food displayed on it. She lazily yawned and asked her maid if there was more food even if the table was already full! The spoiled princess started to eat everything served on the table and each time she asked for more food – again and again and again! The maid was about to serve Cessy the 151st batch of food when, to her surprise, there was no one at the table! The princess was nowhere to be found! Then, a strange oink-oink from under the table was heard. The maid bended over and saw this fat pig with Princess Cessy’s rings on its stubby hands.

Up to know, no one really knows what happened to the princess for no one believed the maid who kept on insisting that Cessy became a pig. Despite the mystery, there’s one thing that’s for sure: after that remarkable event, all pigs, for some reason, became fat too.

Internet: Good or Bad?

by: Florlin Grace Yrad
ABC Dumaguete Correspondent

“Yeah dudes! Surf’s up!”

Hey don’t get the wrong idea. I’m doing another kind of surfing --- surfing the internet.

The internet is really popular especially among kids. Practically everyone knows how to surf. We do chatting, playing, and researching through the net.

However, as much as the internet helps us, it also can destroy us if we are not careful. Pornography, violence, and lies --- these are in abundance in the cyberworld. It can be addicting too. I already know of some whose studies are affected because they are helplessly hooked with computer games. And most computer games are so violent to the point where one needs to kill in order to proceed to the next level. The result? More kids who act out the violence and vulgarities that they see on the net. Really pitiful wouldn’t you say?

So fellow kids, the challenge is for us to use internet in a GOOD way. You see there’s nothing wrong with the internet, it is when we use it for the wrong purposes that makes it wrong! The internet helps us research, it helps us stay in touch with friends, and it allows us to play games for relaxation.

ABC Tjy turns 15

ABC Learning Center Tanjay celebrated its 15th foundation day on December 6-9, 2007. Many activities were lined up for the momentous event.

On December 6, a Thanksgiving Mass was held for the entire ABC Family at the St. James the Greater Church. December 7 saw the opening of the school fair and student exhibit. ABC pupils dazzled the crowd with their mass dance presentations on December 8 coupled with the search for ABC Learning Center Prince and Princess 2007 and ABC Kid Idols. Dan Claude Bonifacio was crowned ABC Prince and Armarie Elhaine Sagario as ABC Princess. Kid Idols for this year are third graders Benhur David Cemini and Shaira Mae Pastor in the Primary Level. Fourth graders Tubby Troy Kent Lozano and Michelene Anfone II, meanwhile, bagged the ABC Kid Idols title in the Intermediate level. On December 9, the school had its Alumni Homecoming and in the afternoon, a parade and closing program culminated the school’s foundation celebration.
