The 10th Council – Wide Jamborette was held at Cabcabon, Banga, Bayawan City last June 19-24, 2007.

The Boy Scouts who joined the said jamborette went to Cabcabon last June 19, 2007 to prepare their tents. Each Boy Scout was so happy. Their feelings can be determined on their faces. Eventhough, the sun was so hot; the Boy Scouts were so noisy causing the disturbance of the neighboring campus. Even I, Benito Albia, Jeorge Ponce Jr. and other members of outfit # 1 – Crew # 1 was disturbed.

In the morning our outfit advisers got mad on us. They warned all the Boy Scouts that if they will still behaved the same as last night last night, all outfit # 1 will go home. So, our outfit behaves and obeys our advisers.

A Lost Friend

By Mary Cherry S. Sanchez

Aireen was a genius, beautiful and friendly girl. We were close friends, and we spent our leisure time by reading novels. She was also a journalist at her school. Being popular, many boys wished to capture her attention. Somehow, Aireen always spent her time on books; she didn’t waste her time by doing useless things. We were always having fun together. We went to beach every Saturday morning and attended mass every Sunday morning.

Monday morning when I was about to go to school, Aireen knocked on our door. We had a short talk and she told me that she was leaving for Cebu to continue her studies and stay there for good. I asked her if she’d come back, but she didn’t answer me, she just hugged me and cried. When she arrived in Cebu, she called me on the phone. She said that her mother had enrolled her already at a private school in St. Paul. I was so happy for her, I cried secretly while she was talking on the phone. Maybe I just missed our happy times together. Weeks and months passed by, I haven’t received any phone calls from her. I tried to call her but nobody answered.
One cold night while I ate my supper, I heard the phone ringing. I immediately ran towards my room to answer the phone. I thought it was she, but the voice that I’ve heard talking in the phone was her father. Her father informed me that Aireen was gone. She died on a bus accident. He told me the whole incident. I cried so hard that night, thinking that my best friend was gone. That I didn’t expect.
Now when I look at the beach and its calmness, it magnifies Aireen on my mind, the best friend that left imprints in my heart and soul.

Worldwide Balik Tanjay: A Nostalgic Experience

The White Stallion, Tanjay National High School(Opao)

There is something mystical and magical about Tanjay. When one is a Tanjayanon he carries with him the fond memories of old Tanjay town wherever he goes. There is a kind of special bonding between Tanjay and its citizens. Tanjayanons have a very strong feeling of attachment to their hometown and are so proud to be Tanjayanons. Among Tanjayanons, a kind of fondness exists among them when they are in a distant land. They may not be close enough to be called friends here in Tanjay, but when they meet in far away place, they are attracted by a feeling of fondness and friendship.

Perhaps, again, this kind of fondness drives these Tanjayanons to organize the Worldwide Balik-Tanjay in order to trace their roots and relive the happy days and fond memories of yesterday when they were still in Tanjay. The program also enables them to meet relatives whom they have not met and renew old acquaintances and friendships. More than anything else, the program enables expatriate Tanjayanons to see for themselves the progress that Tanjay has made and perhaps contribute in their own small way what they can for the progress of Tanjay. The program affords an opportunity for the Tanjayanons to invite foreign tourists to visit Tanjay. In this way, the development of local tourism may be put into high gear.

The Worldwide Balik-Tanjay program is really one nostalgic experience. As the saying goes, "You never leave a place you love; you either take a part of it with you, or leave a part of yourself behind."

Help, Save Mother Earth!

From: The Channel, the official english publication of Sta. Catalina Community High School

NORSU—Sta. Catalina-Bayawan campus held a day seminar in relation to their culmination program for the Science Month Celebration.

In the seminar, the lecturer Dr. Hilconida Calumpong, director for Marine Laboratory of Silliman University, challenged every person who lives in the planet earth to plant as many trees as could be planted. She stressed that the use of fossil fuels in the form of gasoline, kerosene, (LPG) liquefied petroleum gas, bunker oil and other by-products of refining the fossil fuels contributed to a large degree on global warming. Due to the continuous emission of carbon dioxide as these fuels are burnt, the accumulated volume of this gas needs to be minimized. It could only be made possible if more trees were planted. Trees are very good scavengers of carbon dioxide as it is needed in photosynthesis.

As a resident of planet earth you and me are accountable in helping reduce global warming. Let us plant more trees!

When All Else Fails . . . What Makes You Go On?

This article is a contribution of the editor-in-chief of The Channel year 1997, Chona T. Chin.

Despair . . . The most common dilemma of each individual as a part of life’s struggle. It makes it chilly presence felt in any form of catastrophe wherein oftentimes the "senseless" word is being attached. Once faced with this, one cannot help but confront it squarely. After all, each of us has come to know that living is never easy. The underlying question then was . . . what makes a person faced with disheartenment continue to dwell the emptiness of his naked existence? If you want look for the answers, you would find that there’s no definite cure to despair. It is a force, a spirit within us, but in the end it is still a choice. In some moments in each of our lives, we each decide whether to throw away our despair or our hope. In the face of life’s outbreaks, which shall we choose? Hope or despair?

She was born with a complete sight, hearing and speech ability, but she acquired sickness and almost died. She became blind, deaf, and mute. She then grew up to be a difficult child. She was hopeless and rude as expected from a child who couldn’t see, talk, or hear. It was when she met a wonderful teacher Ms. Sullivan who became an instrument nor her journey to learning. Eventually, the once difficult child became one of the world’s inspirations and an icon to those who are physically handicapped. She was Hellen Keller, one of the world’s most renowned inspirational writers.

A colored girl from a broken family who lived in a poor neighborhood with her mother was constantly abused sexually by male relatives. It ended when she moved to her father who was then strict and disciplinarian when she was 14. She struggled with drug addiction and lost a baby during her adolescence. Then she was able to secure a scholarship, went to a university and eventually changed her life. She is now one of America’s richest and most influential woman. During World War II, a young doctor was unjustly imprisoned and put in the concentration camps for almost three years without knowing the whereabouts of his loved-ones. The belief of one day he would be reunited with his beloved gave him faith and survived him despite of torment, hunger, humiliation, and the possibility of being exterminated. Only to discover that only his sister was able to escape earlier. His father, mother, brother and wife were either died in hostile concentration camps, of hunger or were sent to gas oven. But such suffering never stopped him to go on with life. He proposed that there can be meaning in suffering and that searching for this meaning is just enough to go on. He married again, have children, continued his medical profession. He is now one of the most respected persona in psychology who introduced Logotheraphy as his approach in existential counseling. Sir Victor Emil Frankl, writer of inspirational books, doctor, psychologist, therapist and survivor of holocaust.

This boy’s mother died when he was nine. He lost his brother when he was twelve. The only family he had was his father who also died of starvation during the 2nd World War when he was twenty. Darkness, hopelessness and death were in every corner of his once Nazi free country. He worked as a stone breaker, factory worker and a stage actor just to earn a living. Most of his friends died also of hunger, deprivation, and injustices including his best friend priest who was executed for reasons of helping the Jewish community. What does it mean to choose the path of hope? It means we continue to labor for decency amidst in a conflicted society. It means that we refuse to be isolated and withdrawn, but face life’s flaws and imperfections and never give up on life.

From the fragments of our experiences, at times we came to find strategies in preserving our hope. Everything seems to be tolerable by merely imagining the images of a beloved person, by faith in God, by a little sense of humor and or even by glimpses of nature. But not all of these establish a desire to be hopeful unless we search for the large sense of our suffering. At times anticipating for hope seemed to be irrational, even then, even now, hope as a reason to go on with life is something else. It is a thing of beauty, an unexplainable splendor that makes life worth going on.
